Our story began in 1973 when we bought land outside of Moulton, Texas as an investment property. At that time, we had three children under the age of three, Sharon, Lonny and Carrie. Leon had a full time Veterinary practice in Houston all the while managing to spend 2-3 days a week with our family working the farm in a limited fashion running cattle, putting up hay and planting a large garden. We enjoyed time away from the hustle and bustle of city life spending the next three decades improving the property and providing our children the experiences and responsibilities of country life. During that time, we started planting pecan trees. In the beginning of 2005, we made the decision to build our retirement house on the property with completion in early 2006. We then planted a test vineyard of 50 vines of grapes. After attending a day long seminar learning how to start and maintain a vineyard, we were hooked. With the countless hours of help from our wonderful family and friends, the Smith Family Farm evolved into the Smith Family Farm and Vineyard. After 45 years in practice, Leon officially retired in 2013 and we are enjoying the life we set up for ourselves with the vineyard, pecan trees and blackberry bushes. As of 2019, we currently have 6.5 acres of grapes with room to grow to 10 in the years to come. We have 500 Pecan trees and over 500 cultivated blackberry bushes.
